Venice

Once known as the center of the Beat Generation and home to an eclectic mix of residents, Venice has mellowed over the years to become a highly desirable beachside community with some of the most luxurious and historic homes in Los Angeles. A brief history of Venice

Venice was founded in 1905 by Abbot Kinney as a coastal resort town. Originally called Venice of America, it was patterned after its namesake Italian city, with man-made canals winding through the neighborhood’s original development.

Venice was an independent town until it was annexed by Los Angeles in 1926. The town fell into neglect after this, and became known as a “bad neighborhood” marred by crime and gang fights. But it also attracted a certain type of creatives, particularly counterculture artists and writers collectively known as the Beat Generation.

Today that colorful era has left its legacy in Venice through landmarks like the street murals that dot the neighborhood, and establishments that once served as hangouts for the Beat Generation.

    The beach is also home to Muscle Beach, the highly popular outdoor gym that’s considered the birthplace of the fitness boom in the US. Other attractions around Muscle Beach include Venice Beach Recreation Center and a host of gyms and fitness centers, including the original Gold’s Gym.

    Another famous attraction in Venice Beach is Venice Beach Skatepark, known as one of LA’s best skateparks.

    Just a few blocks away from Venice Beach, Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a popular mile long retail strip featuring a diverse collection of shops, galleries, bars, restaurants, and services. You’ll find a wide array of merchandise, including surf t-shirts, vintage wear, antiques, designer clothing, artworks, and more.

  • Venice Beach Canal Historic District

    Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the district features the residential areas around Venice’s historic canals. Visitors can walk along sidewalks and bridges, and marvel at the vintage 1920s homes that line the waterways.
