Venice

Once known as the center of the Beat Generation and home to an eclectic mix of residents, Venice has mellowed over the years to become a highly desirable beachside community with some of the most luxurious and historic homes in Los Angeles. Despite the changes, Venice has kept its unique vibrancy that has distinguished itself from other neighborhoods in Los Angeles and beyond.

A brief history of Venice

Venice was founded in 1905 by Abbot Kinney as a coastal resort town. Originally called Venice of America, it was patterned after its namesake Italian city, with man-made canals winding through the neighborhood’s original development.

Venice was an independent town until it was annexed by Los Angeles in 1926. The town fell into neglect after this, and became known as a “bad neighborhood” marred by crime and gang fights. But it also attracted a certain type of creatives, particularly counterculture artists and writers collectively known as the Beat Generation.

Today that colorful era has left its legacy in Venice through landmarks like the street murals that dot the neighborhood, and establishments that once served as hangouts for the Beat Generation.
