Santa Monica

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean on one side and Los Angeles neighborhoods on all other sides, Santa Monica has come to be known as LA’s little sister, but with a character that’s all its own. Famous for its vibrant recreational pier and iconic Ferris Wheel, Santa Monica is a city bursting with energy, with a high quality of life and diversity that make it one of the most desirable places to live in California.

A brief history of Santa Monica

Santa Monica is believed to be named after the mother of Saint Augustine by Spanish explorers in the 1700s. The city was platted by Senator John P. Jones in 1875, and was immediately populated by enthusiastic property buyers who were attracted to its coastal location and proximity to Los Angeles.

The town gained popularity as a beachfront resort, especially after the construction of the Santa Monica Pier in 1909. While the pier was originally constructed for maritime purposes, it soon became a popular amusement park, featuring iconic rides that have been preserved to this day.

Santa Monica, CA real estate

You’ll find great diversity in Santa Monica homes for sale, from stunning mansions and estates to more regular size homes, as well as condos, townhomes, and apartments.

Home ages vary from over 75 years old to just under five years old, but the majority of houses were built at least 25 years ago. Architectural styles are widely varied as well, from Spanish Colonial and Craftsman to traditional, contemporary, and more.

The most coveted homes in the city are waterfront properties, which include beautiful historic homes and estates built in the early 1900s, as well as more recent construction, some of which are only five years old or newer. There are also a number of condos and townhomes, including luxury developments that feature top of the line amenities and finishes.

Multifamily homes make up a significant part of the housing stock, and make great real estate investment options. Condos, townhomes, and apartments in a wide range of sizes and prices are highly popular housing options, but unlike neighboring LA, Santa Monica is a largely mid-rise community — a feature that greatly adds to its unique charm and character.

Lifestyle and attractions

Santa Monica is perfect for those who seek an active lifestyle, but also has many things to offer others who prefer a more idyllic routine.

  • The beach
The beach defines the lifestyle in Santa Monica. You can spend hours just sunbathing, walking, or sunset watching on the expansive shoreline, or go swimming, surfing, kayaking and other water activities. Volleyball is also a favorite beach activity, as well as biking on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail.
  • Santa Monica Pier
The Santa Monica Pier represents the spirit of the city. With over 8 million visitors annually, this attraction offers numerous things to do, from experiencing the famous rides and watching street performers to dining at the many restaurants in the area, and simply taking a stroll down Pacific Park.
  • Shopping
Shopping in Santa Monica is just as eclectic as the city itself. Each of the city’s eight neighborhoods has its own shopping districts where you can find a wide array of merchandise — from designer and independent clothing brands to arts and crafts, sporting equipment, and so much more.
