Brentwood

Brentwood is a beautiful LA neighborhood with a distinctly upscale suburban feel. Over the years, it has counted the biggest celebrities and A-listers among its residents, and it’s easy to see why. The lush surroundings, low population density, spread out residences, and great accessible location make Brentwood one of the most desirable places to live in Los Angeles.

A brief history of Brentwood

In the 1800s, Brentwood was part of the Rancho San Vicente and Santa Monica land grant. The area’s development started in the 1880s with the construction of the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Soldiers and Sailors.

A small community named Westgate was created around the facility, and this was later subdivided into Brentwood and parts of Pacific Palisades and Bel-Air.

In 1961, a massive forest fire destroyed nearly 500 homes in the neighborhood, resulting in the halting of any development on the surrounding canyons and hillsides. While this was a dark chapter in Brentwood’s history, the slowdown in development gave the neighborhood a more exclusive feel, which made it even more attractive to wealthy buyers.

Brentwood boasts some of the most distinguished homes in architecture, including the George Sturges House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Hunt Residence designed by Paul R. Williams.

A good number of homes are at least 30 to 50 years old, excellently preserved and updated over the years. But there are also quite a few new construction homes built in the last three years or so.

Lifestyle and attractions

Brentwood is an upscale family-friendly community with greater walkability and small town feel than most other LA enclaves. Commercial buildings, including apartments, are mostly confined to the main streets of Sunset Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard, and San Vicente Boulevard, giving the rest of the neighborhood a truly residential vibe.
